Since 1992, every Major League Baseball player who is a member of the Players Association has been able to vote in various categories to decide the winners of the Players Choice Awards each year.
One more trophy was added to the portfolios of two of baseball’s most decorated stars, Justin Verlander and Albert Pujols, on Tuesday night.
Major League Baseball announced Verlander and Pujols as the winners of the American League and National League Comeback Players of the Year Awards for 2022.
The first Astros player to get this honor is Verlander. Since 2005, one player from each league who has returned to the field during the season has received the Comeback Player of the Year Awards, which are recognized by Major League Baseball.
The 2022 Cy Young Award winner had another excellent season in his debut campaign since having Tommy John surgery nearly two years earlier.
With his victory, Pujols, joined fellow Cardinals players Chris Carpenter and Lance Berkman as the third player to receive the Comeback Player of the Year honor. In his final season in Major League Baseball, the 22-year veteran returned to the Cardinals for the 2022 campaign, and he was able to turn back the clock to produce one of his best outings in a long time.
On his way to joining Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, and Babe Ruth as the fourth player in AL/NL history to reach 700 career home runs, Pujols cranked it on down the stretch, slamming 18 second-half home bombs.
